El artículo reconstruye, a partir del cruce de la historia política y la historia intelectual, cómo se posicionó el clérigo y publicista peruano Francisco de Paula González Vigil ante la Inquisición. Y lo hace a través del análisis de un corpus seleccionado de su obra en la que problematiza la relación entre el liberalismo, el republicanismo y la religión, en clave transnacional. Se demuestra que su reflexión sobre la Inquisición no evocaba únicamente el pasado colonial sino también las encrucijadas de su tiempo, pues protestó ante el secuestro del niño judío Edgardo Mortara por parte del Santo Oficio en 1858. En efecto, su propuesta de imaginar al catolicismo en el marco de un proyecto liberal republicano lo enfrentó a la condena de la Inquisición de Roma por entonces vigente.
