Potential role of immune system activation-associated production of neopterin derivatives in humans

Abstract: Neopterin derivatives are produced by human monocyte-derived macrophages and dendritic cells upon stimulation with interferons. Neopterin concentrations measured in urine or blood reflect activation of cellular immunity and endogenous release of interferon-gamma. This review focuses on the clinical utility of measuring neopterin levels in inflammatory disease and the potential functions of neopterin as a mediator and/or modulator in the course of inflammatory and infectious processes. In vitro-studies revealed… Show more

“…Bayram et al have also founded that neopterin levels in menopausal women higher than premenopausal women's [16]. It may have resulted from co-morbid diseases such as atherosclerosis, malnutrition or chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases that led to chronic immune activation [12,18]. Melicharova et al has demonstrated that presence of two or more comorbid conditions and older age than 70 years resulting in significantly increased urinary neopterin levels in breast carcinoma patients [19].…”

“…In v//ro-studies provide evidence that neopterin is not only a marker reflecting an activated cellular immune system, but exerts distinct biochemical effects characterizing it as a pro-inflammatory mediator (13). In this context, an increase in serum neopterin concentration at moderate altitude may serve as an indicator for additional Stimulation of the immune system in patients with metabolic Syndrome.…”

“…The above-mentioned spleen cells were washed with α-MEM once, and cell pellets were suspended in 10 mL of 0.86% NH 4 Cl for 5 min at 4°C for lysis of erythrocytes. The spleen cells were then washed twice with α-MEM and mononuclear cells of the BM were obtained.…”

“…An increased neopterin production is observed following infection by viruses, bacteria and parasites (3). Because neopterin level in body fluid reflects immune responses in vivo, neopterin is regarded as a sensitive marker of the activation of the cellular immune system in humans as well as a factor for prognosis and its indicator biomarker (3,4). However, there is evidence that neopterin is not only a marker of the activity of the immune system, but it also exerts distinct biological effects (3,4).…”
