The world of mushrooms is rich in species of high interest due to their nutritional and pharmaceutical values. However, this world includes also non-edible species, which are not consumed due to being poisonous, of awful smell, or causing some serious gastrointestinal symptoms. Apart from being of no nutritional value, the study of their chemical composition revealed the presence of some biologically active compounds that can be used for medicinal and biological control purposes. Hence, we are focusing on this review on the morphology, and classification of some non-edible mushroom species, including Rhodotus palmatus, Amethyst deceiver, Amanita muscaria, Macrolepiota procera, Scutellinia scutellata, and the genera Panus, Crepidotus, Mycena, together with puffballs mushrooms. Also, we introduced examples of biological activities reported for some of these species, and compounds responsible for such activities.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of Echinacoside on cell proliferation, invasion and mRNA expression changes of invasion-related genes in PC3 androgen-independent prostate cancer cells. Material Methods: The effect of Echinacoside on cell proliferation in PC3 cells was determined by XTT method. Anti-invasive efficacy was achieved using the transwell chamber. Total RNA isolation was performed by Trizol and cDNA was subsequently synthesized. mRNA expression changes of MMP2,MMP9, TIMP1, TIMP2 and TIMP3 were also performed in RT-PCR with SYBER Green. Results: In this study, the IC50 dose of Echinacoside in PC3 cells was determined as 55.21 μM at 48th hour. It was determined that echinacoside inhibited cell invasion in PC3 cells and reduced the invasion by 66% in the dose group. In addition, it was found statistically significant that Echinacoside increased TIMP 1 mRNA expression 1.96 times, TIMP2 mRNA expression 2.60 times, while decreasing MMP2 expression 3.82 times and MMP9 mRNA expression 1.54 times. Conclusion: In conclusion, it was revealed that echinacoside has an anti-proliferative effect on PC3 prostate cancer cells. It has also been shown that invasion-related genes can suppress invasion by regulating expression changes. With this study, preliminary data were presented in terms of detailed molecular biological studies to be carried out on echinacoside and its effect on prostate cancer.

Numerous mushroom bioactive metabolites, including polysaccharides, eritadenine, lignin, chitosan, mevinolin, and astrakurkurone have been studied in life‐threatening conditions and diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular, hypertension, cancer, DNA damage, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity attempting to identify natural therapies. These bioactive metabolites have shown potential as antiviral and immune system strengthener natural agents through diverse cellular and physiological pathways modulation with no toxicity evidence, widely available, and inexpensive. In light of the emerging literature, this paper compiles the most recent information describing the molecular mechanisms that underlie the nutraceutical potentials of these mushroom metabolites suggesting their effectiveness if combined with existing drug therapies while discussing the food functionality of mushrooms. The findings raise hope that these mushroom bioactive metabolites may be utilized as natural therapies considering their therapeutic potential while anticipating further research designing clinical trials and developing new drug therapies while encouraging their consumption as a natural adjuvant in preventing and controlling life‐threatening conditions and diseases. Practical applications Diabetes, cardiovascular, hypertension, cancer, DNA damage, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity are among the world's largest life‐threatening conditions and diseases. Several mushroom bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides, eritadenine, lignin, chitosan, mevinolin, and astrakurkurone have been found potential in tackling these diseases through diverse cellular and physiological pathways modulation with no toxicity evidence, suggesting their use as nutraceutical foods in preventing and controlling these life‐threatening conditions and diseases.
