Postoperative study of vital capacity and ventilation measurements following elective craniotomy

Abstract: CONTEXT AND ObjECTivE: Changes in pulmonary function commonly occur after general surgery. The aims were to evaluate vital capacity, tidal volume and respiratory frequency among patients undergoing elective craniotomy and to determine possible correlations of these parameters with surgery duration and etiology for neurosurgery. DESiGN AND SETTiNG:Prospective, open study at a tertiary university hospital. METHODS:Twenty-six patients underwent elective craniotomy for aneurysm clipping (11) or tumor resection (15… Show more

“…Some studies have found an association between smoking status and the incidence of pulmonary complications, 20 while others have not found this correlation. 22,23 Reductions in VC and respiratory muscle strength occurred in all groups in our study, with a greater negative impact (diminished VC) on the thoracic group than on the lumbar group.…”

“…Mechanical ventilation for more than 48 hours may contribute towards pulmonary complications in patients who have undergone intracranial surgery, 24 and to worsening of gas exchanges. 25 These complications may also contribute towards reintubation.…”

“…Prolonged MV is considered to be a risk factor for the development of pneumonia (21,(27)(28)(29). A number of cardiac surgery studies have reported a higher incidence of respiratory complications in patients subjected to prolonged MV.…”
