ResumenEl objetivo de este estudio fue determinar si había diferencias entre un grupo de futbolistas que han estado lesionados la temporada anterior y uno de futbolistas que no han estado lesionados en los niveles de apoyo social percibido por parte de los jugadores. La muestra estuvo formada por 219 jugadores sénior de fútbol (80.1 %) y fútbol sala (19.9 %) federados (de categorías primera, segunda, autonómica, preferente y categorías inferiores) a nivel regional. De ellos, 138 futbolistas formaron el grupo de aquellos que no sufrieron ninguna lesión deportiva durante la temporada anterior y 81 que sufrieron una o más lesiones. Las variables de estudio fueron el apoyo social percibido y las lesiones deportivas, evaluadas por la Escala Multidimensional de Apoyo Social Percibido de Landeta y Calvete (2002) y un instrumento ad hoc, respectivamente. Los resultados muestran que el grupo de futbolistas no lesionados, respecto al grupo de futbolistas lesionados, poseía niveles más altos de apoyo social en los tres ámbitos de éste (apoyo de los amigos M = 24.05 frente a M = 23.77; Agradecimientos: Este trabajo se ha realizado gracias a la ayuda del Proyecto de la Federación de Fútbol de la Región de Murcia y la Universidad de Murcia, Football Project FFRM+UMU (04 0092 321B 64502 14704).

Clinical Scenario:Mild traumatic brain injury, or concussion, has been associated with physical, cognitive, and emotional sequelae. Little is understood in regard to many characteristics, such as anxiety, and their effect on post-concussion symptoms.Clinical Question:Is state anxiety, trait anxiety, or anxiety sensitivity a clinical predictor of symptoms in those presenting with mild traumatic brain injury or concussion?Summary of Key Findings:A literature search returned 3 possible studies; 3 studies met inclusion criteria and included. One study reported in athletes that greater social support was associated with decreased state-anxiety, lower state anxiety post-concussion was associated with increased social support, and that those with greater social support may experience reduced anxiety, regardless of injury type sustained. One study reported baseline trait anxiety in athletes was not significantly associated with post-concussion state anxiety, but that symptoms of depression at baseline was the strongest predictor for post-concussion state anxiety. Three studies reported that state and trait anxiety are not related to increased post-concussion symptom scores. One study reported that greater anxiety sensitivity is related to higher reported post-concussion symptom scores, which may manifest as somatic symptoms following concussion, and revealed that anxiety sensitivity may be a risk factor symptom development.Clinical Bottom Line:There is low-level to moderate evidence to support that anxiety sensitivity is linked to post-concussion symptoms. State and trait anxiety do not appear to be related to post-concussion symptoms alone. Post-concussion state anxiety may occur if post-concussion symptoms of depression are present or if baseline symptoms of depression are present. Better social support may improve state anxiety post-concussion.Strength of Recommendation:There is grade B evidence to support that state and trait anxiety are not risk factors for post-concussion symptom development. There is grade C evidence to support anxiety sensitivity as a risk factor for developing post-concussion symptoms.

Neuropsychological evaluation is one component of a comprehensive and multifaceted assessment following concussion. Although some neuropsychologists use a "hybrid" assessment approach integrating computerized neurocognitive testing batteries with traditional paper and pencil tests, computerized neurocognitive test batteries are the predominant testing modality for assessment of athletes from the youth to professional level. This review summarizes the most recent research supporting the utility of neuropsychological evaluation and highlights the strengths and weaknesses of both computerized and traditional neuropsychological testing approaches. The most up to date research and guidelines on baseline neurocognitive testing is also discussed. This paper addresses concerns regarding reliability of neuropsychological testing while providing an overview of factors that influence test performance, both transient situational factors (e.g., pain level, anxiety) and characteristics of particular subgroups (e.g., age, preexisting learning disabilities), warranting the expertise of an experienced neuropsychologist for interpretation. Currently, research is moving forward by integrating neuropsychological evaluation with emerging assessment approaches for other domains of brain function (e.g., vestibular function) vulnerable to concussion.
