Postimplant Behavior of Lightweight Polypropylene Meshes in an Experimental Model of Abdominal Hernia

Abstract: All the prosthetic materials induced good host tissue ingrowth, with no significant differences in tensile strength observed. Our findings suggest that partially absorbable lightweight prostheses could offer advantages over nonabsorbable lightweight meshes since less foreign material persists in the recipient, improving abdominal wall compliance.

“…Bellon et al 10 , studying lightweight partially absorbable material, concluded that it may offer advantages over underweight non-absorbable meshes material, since less foreign body remains in the patient, enabling improvement in the abdominal wall. The animals were kept under constant light and temperature conditions in standard cages, being fed with commercial diet and free access to water.…”

“…When inserted intraperitoneally, in general a mesh induces a foreign body reaction and the Experimental studies with surgical meshes for evaluation of biocompatibility and adhesion formation use animal models, such as rabbits [23][24][25] , sheep 26 , pigs 15 , and, especially, rats 11,27 . The variables analyzed include incidence, extent, quality and, in some studies, resistance to rupture and tenacity.…”
