“…While there is a natural tendency for PHN to diminish with time, spontaneous cure is unlikely once pain has been present for 6 months 14 and treatment of PHN persisting beyond 6 months is difficult. 3 The decrease in pain scores observed in both groups in this study may be a placebo response. The usual placebo response rate cited is 30% 15 which is lower than the response rate seen in this study.…”

A high-risk method for studying psychosocial antecedents of chronic pain: The prospective investigation of herpes zoster.

“…One unexpected result was that we did not find that older age predicted chronic herpes zoster pain. It would seem likely that we did not find evidence of this well-established relationship (Portenoy et al, 1986;Watson & Evans, 1986) because of the small sample size and because so few of the patients we studied were under 50 years of age. In future research with larger samples of patients, it will be important to not only examine this relationship but also explore the possibility that psychosocial predictors of chronic herpes zoster pain may be different in older and younger patients.…”
