“…These authors also found a high incidence of lattice degeneration in the younger age group and linked this, in presence of a PVD, to PRD. In our study, the incidence of lattice degeneration was approximately 8%, which was similar (10.4%) to that documented by Ripandelli et al 9 However, unlike Ripandelli et al, 9 none of the eyes with lattice degeneration in our series developed PRD; this is, in spite of all the eyes with lattice degeneration in our series, having the axial length 425 mm. This discrepancy may ultimately be resolved with a longer follow-up interval, but at present, our data would not support tha fact that the contention prophylactic treatment to lattice degeneration would prevent PRD.…”

“…8,9 It follows, however, any age-related effect is likely to be more prevalent in a cohort of younger patients undergoing cataract surgery, and the rationale for undertaking this study was an attempt to identify any such risk factors.…”

“…Median pre- It is known that both aphakia and pseudophakia predispose to posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) by creating changes in the ocular environment that predispose to development of retinal breaks and RD [11,12]. In a study by Ripandelli 453 eyes after uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery were analysed during five years postoperatively; PVD occurred in 75% of eyes with no PVD and no lattice degeneration preoperatively, and in 87% of eyes with lattice degeneration and no PVD preoperatively [13]. Eyes with preoperative lattice degeneration and postoperative PVD showed a higher incidence of RD after cataract surgery (21%) than eyes without preoperative PVD or lattice degeneration (0.70%).…”

“…Ripandelli et al 15 found that a PVD occurred between 2 days and 26 months after phacoemulsification in 107 of 141 (75.88%) eyes without preoperative PVD. Our results also revealed that a PVD was more frequently observed in pseudophakic eyes (P ¼ 0.019).…”
