Porrorchis nickoli n. sp. (Acanthocephala: Plagiorhynchidae) from Mammals in Southeastern Mexico, First Known Occurrence of Porrorchis in the Western Hemisphere

Abstract: Porrorchis nickoli n. sp. is described from the intestine of the gray four-eyed opossum Philander opossum (type host), the Virginia opossum Didelphis virginiana, the common opossum Didelphis marsupialis, and the white-nosed coati Nasua narica. “…In addition, everted cystacanths of P. leibyi and S. lanceoides were found incidentally from 2 raccoon dogs and a weasel. Recently, Salgado-Maldonado and Cruz-Reyes [9] provided a table comparing the proboscis armature, the size of proboscis, and the length of proboscis hooks at different portions of the currently known 16 species of the genus Porrorchis, and our specimens appear to be the closest to P. leibyi. Porrorchis leibyi recorded in Taiwan and Philippines from scops owls (Otus bakkamoena glabripes, Otus bakkamoena fulginosus, and Otus spilocephalus hambroecki), and black-eared kite (Milvus l. lineatus) as definitive hosts, and from a variety of paratenic hosts including snakes, geckos, lizards, or frogs [15].…”
