This is the first description of a Trypanosoma vivax outbreak in the state of São Paulo (municipality of Lins). Fever, jaundice, decreased milk production, weight loss, profuse diarrhea, abortion, anemia, leukocytosis and hyperfibrinogenemia were observed in the affected animals. Thirty-one cows and calves died out of a total of 1080 in the herd. Three cows showed neurological symptoms like dysmetria, ataxia, muscle weakness, ptyalism, lymph node enlargement and submandibular edema. Flagellated hemoparasites were observed in blood smears. The species was diagnosed as T. vivax by means of PCR. This T. vivax strain showed resistance to diaminazene aceturate and the infection spread quickly at the herd. From the ELISA test, 599 serum samples (98.36%) were positive for anti-T. vivax IgG antibodies. This outbreak occurred during a very dry period, which indicates that other factors were involved in the outbreak, such as absence of tabanids and large populations of Haematobia irritans and Stomoxys calcitrans. The increases in these populations may have been due to the use of biosolid waste from sugar and ethanol plants in the sugarcane plantations surrounding the dairy farm.Keywords: Bovine, trypanosomiasis, natural infection, anemia, T. vivax, PCR. ResumoEsta é a primeira descrição de um surto de Trypanosoma vivax ocorrido no Estado de São Paulo, no município de Lins. Animais acometidos apresentaram febre, icterícia, diminuição da produção de leite, perda de peso, diarreia profusa, abortos, anemia, leucocitose e hiperfibrigenemia. Foram registrados 31 óbitos de vacas e bezerros em 1.080 bovinos no total. Três vacas apresentaram sintomatologia nervosa, como dismetria, ataxia e fraqueza muscular, além de ptialismo, aumento de linfonodos e edema submandibular. Hemoparasitas flagelados foram observados em esfregaços sanguíneos, e a espécie de tripanossomo foi diagnosticada como T. vivax por PCR. A cepa de T. vivax mostrou ser resistente ao tratamento com aceturato de diaminozeno e a infecção disseminou rapidamente no rebanho. Pelo ELISA, observou-se que 98,36% (599) das amostras de soro colhidas apresentaram títulos positivos para IgG anti-T. vivax. O surto ocorreu em condições de baixa precipitação pluviométrica, fato que indica que outros fatores estavam envolvidos na ocorrência desse surto, como a ausência de tabanídeos e a grande presença de Haematobia irritans e Stomoxys calcitrans, cujo aumento populacional pode ser devido ao uso de resíduos de usinas de açúcar e álcool nos canaviais que circundavam a granja leiteira.Palavras-chave: Bovino, tripanossomíase, infecção natural, anemia, T. vivax, PCR.

Bien que l'importance des glossines dans la transmission des trypanosomes soit connue au Gabon, elle a longtemps masqué celle des stomoxes. C'est dans ce cadre qu'une étude sur la chorologie des Stomoxyinae a été conduite, en grande saison sèche et à l'aide de pièges Vavoua, dans un ancien foyer de la Trypanosomose Humaine Africaine (THA) en particulier dans le Parc National de Moukalaba Doudou (PNMD). Au total 14 pièges Vavoua ont été placés dont 7 au village Doussala et 7 en forêt que sont les deux biotopes prospectés dans le PNMD. L'enquête entomologique a permis de mettre en évidence six (6) espèces de stomoxes qui vivent en sympatrie avec des densités apparentes (DAP) différentes suivant les espèces. En effet, Stomoxys omega avec une densité appaente par piège de 47,94 a été l'espèce la plus abondante, suivi de Stomoxys niger niger (DAP=19,49). Les autres espèces à savoir Stomoxys xanthomelas, Stomoxys niger bilineatus, Stomoxys calcitrans et Stomoxys transvittatus ont été très faiblement représentées avec des densités apparentes respectives de 0,25 ; 0,23 ; 0,012 et 0,004. La forte abondance des stomoxes dans ce parc nous interpelle à considérer ces insectes dans la lutte contre la THA dans cet ancien foyer.

Bionomic aspects of Stomoxys calcitrans (Linnaeus, 1758) (Diptera: Muscidae) were studied under laboratory conditions. For this reason, laboratory-rearing techniques were optimized at the National Veterinary School of Toulouse. The colony was maintained at 25 ± 2 °C, 50 ± 10% RH under a 12-hour light cycle and observed daily. The size of each adult cage is 30 x 30 x 30 cm and designed to house about 500-1,000 flies. The average cycle from egg to adult was 19.2 ± 1.7 days. The mean longevity of imagos was 9.3 ± 5.8 days and not significantly different between sexes. Stable flies were split into two groups; the first was fed with blood, honey and water, and the second was fed only with honey and water. The mean weight of a blood meal was 11.1 ± 3.8 mg with no significant differences between males and females. The mean longevity of non-blood fed flies was found to be significantly higher (10.4 ± 3.9 days) than those fed with blood. The maximum lifespan was shorter for non-blood fed males (17 days) and females (18 days) than for those fed with blood (females: 24 days, males: 23 days). Under these laboratory conditions, S. calcitrans rearing was successfully established. In the end, the number of expected generations of S. calcitrans and the net reproduction rate were estimated to be 11.8 generations/year and 16.2 living females per female respectively.
