Poor nutritional status is associated with urinary tract infection among older people living in residential care facilities

Abstract: The majority of participants were at risk of or suffering from malnutrition. Urinary tract infection during the preceding year was independently associated with poor nutritional status. Dependence in feeding was also associated with poor nutritional status as were low MMSE scores for women. Prospective observations and randomized controlled trials are necessary to gain an understanding of a causal association between malnutrition and UTI.

“…Likewise, data from the study by Pereira et al 2 with elderly people living in LTCF show that the prevalence of nutritional risk was higher among those with cognitive decline ( p=0.006). Carlsson et al 18 in a study with elderly individuals with physical and cognitive deficits, also noticed that the condition of nutritional risk was higher among individuals with cognition problems ( p=0.024). This condition was also higher among eating-dependent individuals ( p= 0.014).…”

“…65,66 For example, in a study of 188 nursing home residents with physical and cognitive impairment, urinary tract infection during the preceding year was independently associated with poor nutritional status. 67 Similar to the association between frailty and infection, there is a two-way association between malnutrition and infection, as well as between dehydration and infection. In contrast to frailty, however, age-related immune and organ-specific changes that occur in older adults, malnutrition and dehydration both respond to intervention.…”

“…Malnutrition is prevalent in aged care facility residents [1][2][3][4] and hospital patients. [5][6][7] Malnutrition during hospital stay can lead to a greater risk of delayed wound healing, pressure injuries, delirium, and postoperative complications, resulting in increased length of stay (LOS) and delayed postoperative recovery.…”
