Polysulfone–Ceria Mixed-Matrix Membrane with Enhanced Radiation Resistance Behavior

Abstract: A novel polysulfone–cerium oxide (Psf–ceria) mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) with enhanced γ radiation resistant property was developed. Ceria nanoparticles were synthesized by gel-combustion route and then various concentrations of ceria (0.1–2% of Psf) were incorporated in the polysulfone matrix to synthesize Psf–ceria MMMs. Radiation stability of the synthesized membranes was checked with γ radiation doses of 100, 500, and 1000 kGy. Ceria nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoe… Show more

“…Micro- and nanosized tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) were added to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and studied against low energy X-rays, and nanostructured tungsten oxide/polyvinyl chloride shields have higher photon attenuation compared to the microsized samples (Aghaz et al 2016 ). Cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) nanoparticles were synthesized by the solgel method and were further used to develop polysulfone–cerium oxide mixed-matrix membrane with enhanced gamma radiation-resistant property (Bedar et al 2019 ).…”

“…In general, the incorporation of inorganic additives paves the way to modify the polymer electrolyte membranes with required characteristics for a specific application. 29 Niobium pentoxide is one of the most important transition metal oxide which has rich adsorption sites on its surface and stimulate a strong interaction with water molecules. It shows abundant applications in recent technology and serves as an oxygen sensor material, good corrosion resistance, electrochromic display, microelectronics, photo electrodes, etc.…”

“…The Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectra of nanocomposites are shown in Figure , and the assignments of the main peaks of PSF are summarized in Table 1 . As observed in Figure , the peak at 846.7 cm −1 is assigned to the β‐phase of terpolymer and peaks at 1012.9, 1103.1, 1147.5, 1234.7, 1293.5, 1322.4, 1485.9, 1503.7 and 1583.7 cm −1 are assigned to characteristic functional groups of PSF . With more PSF introduced, the peak of terpolymer remains unchanged while the characteristic peaks for PSF are gradually enhanced.…”
