Polystyrene-block-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-block-polystyrene Triblock Copolymer Thermoplastic Elastomer Synthesized via RAFT Emulsion Polymerization

Abstract: A series of well-controlled polystyrene-b-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene triblock copolymers were prepared by emulsion polymerization with a carefully designed amphiphilic macroRAFT (reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer) agent. The triblock copolymers were produced within four hours and only a few percent of dead chains were estimated. Tensile strength of the materials was a function of composition only and it increased linearly with polystyrene composition up to 50 wt %. The ultimate tensile… Show more

“…Luo et al also adopted PAA-b-PSt-TTC as a macro-RAFT agent and surfactant in a sequential aqueous emulsion route to PSt-b-P n BuA-b-PSt (SBAS). 107 The controlled synthesis of PSt resulted in lower Đ (1.2-1.5) than in the RAFT studies discussed above, suggesting that colloidal instability and nucleation issues were minimised by using an amphiphilic macro-RAFT agent.…”

“…107 Whilst morphology within the symmetrical copolymer particles was non-descript, upon casting films from THF reasonably well-defined lamellar morphology was evident, suggesting that a confinement effect drove the non-descript structure within particles. Dynamic mechanical analysis was employed to elucidate properties of the triblock copolymers relevant to TPEs.…”

“…Radical segregation efect introduced by (mini)emulsion polymerization in heterogeneous system, on the other hand, reduced the reaction time and suppressed radical termination [64,65]. Combining emulsion polymerization with RAFT, PS-PnBA-PS triblock copolymers with different molecular weight and composition were prepared in shorter reaction time [66]. By varying weight percentage of PS from 20.2 to 71.5%, the ultimate tensile strength was in the range from 3.0 to 12.5 MPa and strain at break was in the range from 90 to 1300%.…”
