Polysomnography in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Abstract: An increased level of awaketime and a significant decrease in amount of deep sleep and REM sleep were revealed in ALS patients. Sleep breathing disorders are found significantly more often in ALS patients, mainly as alveolar hypoventilation syndrome and less frequently as obstructive sleep apnea. The lower level of mean and minimum blood oxygen saturation and increased respiratory rate were detected. These changes are possibly due to the presence of restrictive respiratory disorders. These disturbances reduce … Show more

“…Due to its ability to increase platelet counts at low doses, vincristine is also used to treat patients with immune thrombocytopenia [89,90]. As ALS patients' platelets were found to be more aggregated or grouped than controls [91,92], the effects of vincristine on platelet activation should also be taken into account when considering its possible use in ALS treatment.…”

“…PLTs are small, anucleate multifunctional cells with a primary role in hemostasis and thrombosis [ 137 ], but they are also involved in inflammatory processes that contribute to different pathologies, like cardiovascular disease and cancer, and are risk factors for neurodegenerative diseases and their progression [ 138 , 139 , 140 , 141 ]. Various neurodegenerative pathological conditions, including PD, AD, and ALS, were linked to platelet dysfunction [ 142 ], activation, and aggregation [ 143 , 144 , 145 ]. Furthermore, oxidative and physiological stress induce structural and functional alterations and PLT activation in AD, ALS, and PD [ 52 , 143 , 144 , 145 , 146 ].…”

The PLT cytoskeleton is a dynamic, complex protein network that plays a key role in platelet function [ 147 ].…”
