Abstract: Danshen, the dried root of Salvia miltiorrhiza, one of the most investigated medicinal plants with well-defined phytochemical constituents, has shown prominent clinical outcomes for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticoagulant activities to attain vascular protection and additional benefits for cancer therapy. More recently, activation of neutrophil and excessive formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have been observed in pathological conditions of metastatic cancers; thus, we hypothesized th… Show more

“…Activation of neutrophil and excessive formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) has been observed in the pathological condition of metastatic cancers. Sal-B has been demonstrated to interfere with NADPH oxidase-dependent NET formation thus reducing incidence of metastasis [34]. In hepatic stellate cells, Sal-B decreased ROS production and inhibited lipid peroxidation and cell proliferation via the inhibition of NADPH oxidase [35,36].…”

“…Zhang et al [7] reported that salidroside can alleviate hepatic steatosis in C57BLKS/Leprdb(db/db) mice with type 2 diabetic. This compound can also dose-dependently regulate lipid accumulation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and inflammasome activation against high-fat diet-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease [8,9]. In particular, salidroside has an excellent protective efficacy on liver disease via its antioxidant activities [5,10].…”

“…NETs are a kind of DNA webs derived from neutrophils, which can capture circulating cancer cells and promote cancer metastasis (Cools-Lartigue et al, 2013). In a nude mouse model study of lung metastasis of gastric cancer cells, Sal B can prevent the migration of neutrophils to the metastatic site by reducing plasma neutrophil elastase and fibrinogen levels, and disrupting early NETs formation by blocking myeloperoxidase to prevent hematogenous metastasis of cancer cells (Tao et al, 2018). These results suggest that the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects of Sal B may be beneficial for suppressing cancer metastasis to a certain extent.…”
