“…In this long‐term follow‐up study ANA titres of ≥ 1 : 80 were found in 11·7% of 472 patients with PLE. This finding is in line with previous investigations yielding prevalence rates of elevated ANA titres in patients with PLE of between 2·9% and 19% 4–9 . However, until recently the cut‐off level for ANA positivity in healthy patients had been ill defined.…”

“…Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) as well as anti-SS-A ⁄Ro antibodies have been detected in patients with PLE in varying frequencies (2AE9-19%) but most follow-up studies so far have failed to show a progression of ANA-positive patients with PLE into LE. [4][5][6][7] However, there are also reports on the occurrence of subacute cutaneous LE (SCLE) or systemic LE (SLE) in patients with PLE with high titres of ANA and ⁄or anti-SS-A ⁄Ro antibodies and severe sun sensitivity. 8,9 The aim of our investigation was to determine the prevalence of ANA in a large cohort of patients with PLE and to examine whether ANA positivity is associated with an increased risk for development of LE during a follow-up period of up to 16 years.…”
