Obtaining photocomposite materials with predefined optical properties requires a good knowledge of the refractive index evolution of the photopolymerizable media. In this aim, relationships between refractive index and conversion in the course of an epoxy resin photopolymerization are first established due to real time refractometric and infrared spectroscopic techniques. Refractive index value increases with conversion as long as the photocured material is not in glassy state. A shift of the relationship toward lowest refractive index values is observed when the reaction temperature increases. Second, the final photocured materials previously obtained are characterized. It is highlighted that the higher the photocuring temperature, the higher the epoxy conversion but the lower the material density at room temperature. This unusual result can be explained by the evolution of the material thermo‐optic coefficient, dn/dT. Indeed, the higher the conversion, the lower this coefficient.

For the purpose of producing polymer ribbon/polymermatrix composites, we manufacture rectangular cross section ribbons directly by spinning from a rectangular die. A range of optical techniques, including the interferometric measurement of filament refractive index and characterization of composite optical performance through the modulation transfer function, are employed to quantify properties and guide system design. The interferometric measurements revealed that, compared with previous mechanically worked filaments, the die spun filaments have a more uniform optical path across the fiber. These measurements also enabled characterization of the filament's chromatic dispersion and allowed for matching the matrix refractive index across the visible spectrum. The results show that composites manufactured from rectangular die-spun ribbons have excellent optical properties with a significant optical performance improvement over previous work. POLYM. Traditionally, the morphologies of the dispersed phase in Polycarbonate (PC)/poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) blends were strongly influenced if AN content in SAN changed significantly even under constant processing conditions. This would hinder the pure research intended to study the effect of the refractive index difference between the polymer host and the polymeric dispersed particles on the optical properties tough. Therefore, we respectively prepared different PC/SAN light diffusion sheets with four types of SAN containing different AN content ranging just from 20 to 25 wt %, a narrow range that sufficiently ensures the relatively stable morphology of different SAN in PC matrix. The results suggest that the refractive index of SAN increases with an decreasing AN content, thus narrowing the refractive index difference between PC and SAN and producing PC/SAN(70/30) light diffusion sheets with an increasing transmittance and decreasing haze.
