Polycarbosilane-derived SiC/single-walled carbon nanotube nanocomposites

Abstract: One of the key issues for the development of high toughness carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced composites is the control of the interfacial bond between the CNT and the matrix. Here, we introduce a novel technique to facilitate the homogeneous coating of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) bundles with polycarbosilane (PCS)-derived SiC nanoparticles. The PCS dissolved in n-hexane was used as a precursor for SiC nanoparticles. The results obtained from XRD, TEM and EDXS analyses confirmed the formation of β-SiC… Show more

“…There have been limited studies on single-wall CNTs ͑SWNTs͒ reinforced ceramics. 6,9,13,15,[19][20][21][22][23][24][25] An interesting aspect of alumina/ SWNTs composites is the unique grain-boundary structures they possess. In these composites, bundles of SWNTs have been found to segregate at the alumina grain boundaries.…”

“…Such simultaneous strengthening, toughening and softening is unique, unprecedented and highly promising as compared with the few reported simultaneous improvements realized only at low MWCNT concentrations (0.9 vol.% 38) , 3.0 vol.% 39) and 4.0 vol.% 37) ), in which even slight increase of MWCNT concentration was shown to dramatically deteriorate both the toughness and strength.…”
