Poly(vinyl alcohol)/SWNT Composite Film

Abstract: Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite films using poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-covered, well dispersed single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) exhibit significant improvement in tensile strength and modulus as compared to the control PVA and PVA/PVP/SDS films. The evidence of load transfer to the nanotubes in the composite film has been obtained from the shift in the Raman SWNT D* band peak position.

“…There is a limited number of studies of nanotubepolymer composites, and they generally involve high reinforcement content (1,2,(11)(12)(13)(14)(15). Furthermore, many of the, studies pertain to composites reinforced by multiwalled carbon nanotubes.…”

“…These workers did not observe any increase in crystallinity and attributed the enhancement in mechanical properties to the homogeneous distribution of fillers in the matrix. Zhang et al (13) examined composites of PVA with KOH-treated SWNTs and report that H and E increase by 78% and 110%, respectively, whereas Li et al (11) report 30% and 75% increases for the 5 wt% SWNT-epoxy composite. These workers observe that intercalation of the nanotubes is the cause for relatively poor enhancement in mechanical properties.…”

“…However, the TS value of PHB-g-AA/MWNTs-OH increased with increasing MWNTs-OH content up to 1 wt.% and then decreased. The positive effect on tensile strength was attributed to the presence of immobilized or partially immobilized polymer phases [45], high aspect ratio and surface area of the carbon nanotubes, the nanoscale dispersion of MWNTsÀOH layers in the polymer matrix, and the formation of chemical bonds through the condensation reaction between PHB-g-AA and MWNTs-OH. For MWNTs-OH content above 1 wt.%, the decrease in ten- sile strength could be attributed to the inevitable aggregation of the MWNTs-OH in higher MWNTsÀOH content (see Table 2).…”

“…Numerous composites fibers reinforced by SWCNTs, such as poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) [3], polyacrylonitrile [4,5], polyethylene [6], polypropylene [7] and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) [8,9] have been reported for improvement of the mechanical properties. While the introduction of SWCNTs enhances the tensile strength of the matrix fiber, exfoliation and orientation of SWCNTs in polymer matrices remain a challenge for achieving high tensile strength in SWCNT-reinforced fibers.…”
