Poly(methyl methacrylate) bone cement composited with mineralized collagen for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures in extremely old patients

Abstract: To examine the clinical effects of a new bone cement composed of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and mineralized collagen (MC) compared with pure PMMA bone cement in treating osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) in patients aged over 80. In all, 32 cases using pure PMMA bone cement and 31 cases using MC-modified PMMA (MC-PMMA) bone cement for OVCFs between June 2014 and March 2016 were screened as PMMA group and MC-PMMA group, respectively, with an average age of over 80. The operation duratio… Show more

“…Thus, we believe PVP treatment for day surgery procedure is feasible. However, the majority of published studies on PVP treatment still show an average hospital stay above 5 days [4,[9][10][11], and patients need to stay in the hospital, which increases the risk of nosocomial infection but also the hospital costs. Through constant clinical practice, the procedure has further improved, and the feedback from patients has given us the confidence to perform day surgery.…”

“…There is sufficient evidence that PVP is an effective mean in relieving pain for symptomatic OVCFs [2,4,7,8]. However, the majority of published studies on PVP for OVCFs still report an average hospital stay of 5 to 15 days, with significant patient inconvenience and cost to the healthcare system [4,[9][10][11].…”

“…Some typical cases were reported by our own and other researchers and surgeons. 19,20,[22][23][24] In the current study, MC modified bone cements were used to treat patients with Kummell's disease without spinal cord compression, This work was feasible and obtained good clinical results.…”
