The complexity of these environments-apparent by the rich user interactions and sophisticated user-generated content that they offer-poses unique challenges for policy management and compliance. These challenges are also impacting the life cycle of the software system that implements the virtual environment. The goal of this paper is to identify and sketch i… Show more

“…Legal control over users can be exercised via a web system's terms of services. Readability and understandability of the terms is a concern because they (potentially) constitute a contract between the operator and users, and because users have a broad spectrum of educational backgrounds [30] [28]. One study found that these terms have become successively more elaborate between 1998 and 2006 [31].…”

In addition, the added complexity makes it difficult to draft accurate and comprehensive privacy policies [14]. Second, the ease with which network formation is accomplished means that social networks are often more expansive than one might expect, leading users to misjudge their actual exposure.…”

“…Unfortunately, the privacy policies of social networking applications are much more complex than those of their Web 1.0 counterparts, in some cases proving inaccessible to the average user [17]. One of the causes for this phenomenon is that social networking applications offer relatively rich interactions.…”
