Polarization Potential Has No Effect on Maximum Current Density Produced by Halotolerant Bioanodes

Abstract: Halotolerant bioanodes are considered an attractive alternative in microbial electrochemical systems, as they can operate under higher conductive electrolytes, in comparison with traditional wastewater and freshwater bioanodes. The dependency between energetic performance and polarization potential has been addressed in several works; however the vast majority discusses its effect when wastewater or freshwater inocula are employed, and fewer reports focus on inocula from highly-saline environments. Moreover, t… Show more

“…The four bioanodes grown at this polarization potential are referred to as TDWW, TDWWS1, TDWWS2, and TDWWS3 all through the figures and text. The constant electric polarization was maintained for 17 days, which is a reasonable amount of time to obtain matured bioanode on carbon based electrodes colonized by halo-exoelectrogenic bacteria (Erable et al, 2009 ; Rousseau et al, 2014 ; González-Muñoz et al, 2018 ; Askri et al, 2019 ). Current densities vs. time plots for −0.1 V/SCE polarization potential are shown in Figure 1 .…”

“…The applied potential may be a tool that helps to achieve this objective [149,150] but may not always be effective [151,152]. This item is still under debate [153,154,101] (see a short review in [114]). The electron transfer capacity of a biofilm matrix may also be improved by developing it around ultra-microelectrodes [155].…”
