Polarizability Matrix Extraction of a Bianisotropic Metamaterial from the Scattering Parameters of Normally Incident Plane Waves

Abstract: In this paper, a polarizability matrix retrieval method for bianisotropic metamaterials is presented. Assuming that scatterers can be modeled by electric and magnetic pointdipoles located at their centers, the induced dipole moments are analytically related to the normally incident fields, while the scattered fields are also analytically obtained for two individual cases of normal wave incidence. The latter can be combined with the incident fields, to express the desired polarizabilities, with regard to the me… Show more

“…29 are similar to the expressions found for the effective polarizabilities of metamaterial elements in periodic metasurfaces [65,66]. This relationship means that a single element in a rectangular waveguide acts as a dipole whose response is equivalent to the response of the element in a periodic metasurface.…”

“…Incorporating the concepts of [2,3], the proposed formulation employs the polarizabilities obtained from dynamic schemes [4,5] to retrieve the effective parameters of the corresponding bulk metamaterial structures. Moreover, the required wavenumbers are derived by the NRW-extracted refractive index or the solution of the corresponding eigenvalue problem.…”

“…In particular, for an actual implementation, the effective polarizabilities α m,i for the metamaterial elements must be determined accurately, which requires an extracting method from either measurements or numerical simulations. Such methods have been presented elsewhere [46,47] for periodic metasurfaces under plane wave incidence, and in [42] for waveguide-fed metasurfaces, and provide a path towards a highly accurate modeling platform for metasurface apertures. Since we are more interested here in general trends and behavior, we do not pursue extraction methods further in the present analysis.…”
