“…This may have resulted in subpleural leakage of air into the pulmonary interstitium, tracking along the mediastinum. A similar complication has been previously reported in a primigravida in the second stage of labour [2]. Haematocolpos should thus be considered in the dierential diagnosis of low back pain and lower abdominal symptoms in teenage girls.…”

“…1 It mainly occurs in young, healthy, primiparous women with dystocic labour. [1][2][3][4][5][6] The causal mechanism is debatable. Increased intraluminal and intra-alveolar pressure caused by Valsava manoeuvres during the expulsive phase of labour may cause alveoli to rupture and air to track between the parietal and visceral pleura and along the perivascular sheath into the mediastinum.…”

“…This infrequent and self-limiting condition results either from prolonged Valsalva manoeuvre during labour, sports, musical instrument performance [7], inhalation of drugs, or as a result of mechanical airway obstruction [1]. Usually it affects young males (13-35 years) and pregnant females, and is more frequent in thin patients [8].…”
