The term neurofibromatosis (NF) is used for a group of genetic disorders that primarily affect the cell growth of neural tissues. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), also known as von Recklinghausen´s disease, is the most common type of NF and accounts for about 90% of all cases. It is one of the most frequent human genetic diseases, with a prevalence of one case in 3,000 births. The expressivity of NF1 is extremely variable, with manifestations ranging from mild lesions to several complications and functional impairment. Oral manifestations can be found in almost 72% of NF1 patients. A case of a NF1 patient with a gingival neurofibroma in the attached gingiva of the lingual aspect of the lower central incisors is presented. The lesion was nodular, with sessile base, non-ulcerated, non-painful, with normal colour and measured 1 cm in diameter. An excisional biopsy of the oral lesion was performed. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis confirmed the clinical hypothesis of neurofibroma. Because NF1 is one of the most common genetic diseases and oral manifestations are very common, dentists should be aware of the characteristics of this disease.

Background: To present a rare case of a 2-year-old girl with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) who presented with ptosis of the right upper eyelid along with a tumor in the eyelid. Methods: A magnetic resonance imaging scan of the orbit revealed a solid tumor located extraconally at the site of the right lacrimal gland. A transcranial orbitotomy was performed. Results: Histopathological examination demonstrated expanded nerve branches/fascicles cut in various planes in between normal lacrimal gland acini. These findings were consistent with a plexiform neurofibroma presumably deriving from the lacrimal nerve and/or a supraorbital nerve branch. Conclusion: This is the first case of a plexiform neurofibroma involving the lacrimal gland ever described and the tumor shows similarities with neurofibroma in other salivary glands with a high recurrence rate. Plexiform neurofibromas are frequently seen in patients with NF1 and rarely undergo malignant transformation.

A 15 year old boy presented with swelling in the submandibular region. X ray of the part showed faint radio opaque shadow. A provisional diagnosis of sialadenitis with sialiolithiasis was made. Excised mass was reported histopathologically as plexiform neurofibroma of submandibular salivary gland. Plexiform neurofibroma of the salivary gland is a rare benign tumour, often present in the parotid gland. It is very rare in submandibular salivary gland. It is a slow growing, locally infiltrating tumour.

Plexiform neurofibroma of the submandibular gland

Abstract: A rare plexiform neurofibroma of the submandibular gland in a patient with neurofibromatosis is presented. The clinical manifestations of the disease are reviewed. The need for early diagnosis of neurofibroma is emphasized because of malignant transformation.
