Abstract: Hemocyte-spreading behavior is required for expressing a cellular immune response, nodulation, which clears the vast majority of invading microbes from circulation. The nodulation response is completed by a layer of plasmatocytes, which spread over the nodule and initiate a malanization process leading to darkened nodules. Plasmatocyte-spreading peptide (PSP), the first reported insect cytokine, is responsible for mediating the spreading and attachment of some subclasses of plasmatocytes to nodules. Prostaglan… Show more

“…As seen in our previous reports [8], [31], PGs mediate hemocyte-spreading behavior and nodulation. Aspirin is a specific inhibitor of mammalian and invertebrate forms of COX [32].…”

“…Eicosanoid immune signals act as a common downstream signal for the cytokine plasmatocyte-spreading peptide (PSP) and 2 biogenic monoamines in S. exigua [4,53]. We proposed cross-talk mechanisms to account for the coordinated cellular immune responses recorded in S. exigua [53]. Here, we propose an additional element in the intracellular signaling in S. exigua, in which increasing NO concentrations, following bacterial challenge or SNAP treatment, led to enhanced PLA 2 activity.…”

“…Previous work has shown that extracellular Ca 2+ is required in order that hemocyte spreading can be induced by plasmatocyte-spreading peptides from Spodoptera exigua 22 . Likewise, we also found that PsGBP-dependent spreading of P. separata plasmatocytes was inhibited when extracellular Ca 2+ was chelated with either EDTA or EGTA (Fig.…”
