“…Sun exposure has also been reported to induce new skin lesions and to worsen the condition in several patients. [1][2][3][4][5][6]10,13,16 Interestingly, an abnormal response was not observed in most patients when they were phototested with UV-A and UV-B irradiation.…”

“…Four teen years before, Perry et al [2] had described 3 patients with similar clinical and histological features coining the term 'plaque-like cutaneous mucinosis'. Since then, numer ous new cases of both syndromes have been reported which have contributed to a more precise description, leading them to be considered as a single entity, a concept that the majority of authors share [3][4][5], while others suggest that REM and plaque-like cutaneous mucinosis are part of a spectrum, different entities or even regard REM as a variety of lupus erythematosus.…”

“…We have only been able to find one such case with paraprotein but this patient also suffered from macroglobulinaemia (Waldenstrom), which might explain the occur rence of abnormal serum globulins [1], Our patient has a certain clinical and histochemical similarity with the plaque-like form of mucinosis on the chest and back described in three patients by Perry et al [11], They considered it to be a fifth subgroup of LM. These patients also had somewhat urticarial papules but these were strictly localized to the anterior and posterior aspects of the thorax, and persisted essentially unchanged for years.…”

“…The basic histological change in the various forms of LM is an accumulation of mucoid material between the collagen bundles of the corium. Based on histochemical staining reactions, the mucosubstance has been interpreted as hyaluronic acid [5].The aetiology of LM is obscure [11]. M c C a r th y et al [8] reported, how ever, in 1964 a case of scleromyxoedema with an abnormal, extremely basic globulin in both serum and skin.…”
