Plant Growth Regulators INCYDE and TD-K Underperform in Cereal Field Trials

Abstract: Using plant growth regulators to alter cytokinin homeostasis with the aim of enhancing endogenous cytokinin levels has been proposed as a strategy to increase yields in wheat and barley. The plant growth regulators INCYDE and CPPU inhibit the cytokinin degrading enzyme cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX), while TD-K inhibits the process of senescence. We report that the application of these plant growth regulators in wheat and barley field trials failed to enhance yields, or change the components of yields. … Show more

“…In wheat (Triticum aestivum), early bioassay work suggested a complex of bioactive cytokinins and glucosides with zeatin predominant, e.g., [43][44][45]. Recent comprehensive LC-MS/MS analyses revealed the presence of 20 isoprenoid cytokinins, with a predominance of tZand cZ-type cytokinins and low levels of iP types and DZ types [46,47]. There is only one report of a 7-glucoside (tZ7G) in wheat [48].…”

“…It can improve the antioxidant enzyme activity and thus reduce the oxidative stress. Synthetic cytokinins such as Thidiazuron (TDZ) and CPPU N-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N'phenylurea (CPPU), that can activate cytokinin receptors are known to improve chlorophyll b content and can be used as a cotton defoliant (van Voorthuizen et al, 2021).…”

“…INCYDE is a particularly potent CKX inhibitor among them (Prerostova et al, 2020). INCYDE has been used to improve plant tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses such as the cadmium challenge in Bulbine natalensis and Rumex crispus as well as the salt challenge in tomato (van Voorthuizen et al, 2021) and Verticillium longisporum (Prerostova et al, 2020). In a recent study, an analog of INCYDE, INCYDE-F was used in the barley field for altering the endogenous cytokinin content (Koprna et al, 2020).…”
