Piezoelectric Nanotopography Induced Neuron‐Like Differentiation of Stem Cells

Abstract: The biophysical characteristics of the extracellular matrix, such as nanotopography and bioelectricity, have a profound influence on cell proliferation, adhesion, differentiation, etc. Recognition of the function of a certain biophysical cue and fabrication of biomaterial scaffolds with specific properties would have important implications and significant applications in tissue engineering. Herein, nanotopographic and piezoelectric biomaterials are fabricated and the combination effect of and individual contri… Show more

“…More recently, another study provided direct evidence that the basic activities of living cells created a local electric field on the piezoelectric nanogenerators that can modulate their own cellular behavior without external chemical or physical stimulation (Murillo et al, 2017). Another recent study also proved that PVDF nanostripes could generate a surface piezoelectric potential via the movement and traction of the cells grown on them (Zhang et al, 2019). On the basis of all these previous evidence, it is possible to postulate that the cell‐scale movement of hESCs induces the piezoelectric potential on the VNm–PVDF scaffold, which, in turn, affects their own differentiation without external mechanical stimulation.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…In our research, P (VDF-TrFE) /rGO/PCL emerges as a promising material for nerve regeneration [55]. Prior studies have underscored the advantages of biomimetic materials in facilitating bioelectrical signal transmission during peripheral nerve regeneration [56][57][58]. An appropriate local voltage potential has the capacity to instigate a conformational shift in the voltage-gated channel, leading to intracellular calcium transients [23].…”

“…Uniaxially aligned pristine PCL nanofibers were prepared as a control group. Compared with disordered orientation structures, highly ordered architecture can promote cell migration by providing topographic cues. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and the corresponding Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) patterns of the PCL and PCL/BP nanofibers, respectively, indicated the smooth surface of the nanofibers and their ordered array (Figure f,g). The integration of BP NSs had no significant influence on fiber morphology.…”
