Picosecond time-resolved spectroscopy of the photocolouration reaction of photochromic naphthoxazine-spiro-indolines

Abstract: Leicestershire, U K LEZZ 3TU Central Laser Facility, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Didcot, Oxfordshire, U K O X 1 2 OQX The photochemical formation of the open merocyanine forms of several naphthoxazine-spiro-indolines in different solvents have been studied using both picosecond transient absorption (PTA) and picosecond time-resolved resonance Raman (PTR3) methods. The PTA studies have established the presence of several metastable species in the photochemical formation of the coloured merocyanine form of th… Show more

“…The absorption of UV radiation by the thermodynamically stable closed form, N, leads, by cleavage of a CÀO bond, to an open structure (Scheme). This process occurs in less than 50 ps from the excited singlet state [1]. This photoisomer, P, has extended conjugation and a merocyanine-like structure and, thus, absorbs in the visible region.…”

“…We compare their behaviors in fluid media and in amorphous polymers. [9,10-b] [1,4]oxazine (2a), and 5-chloro-2,3-dihydro-1,3,3-trimethylspiro[indole-2,2'-[2H]phenanthro [9,10-b]oxazine] (2b) were used as supplied by Aldrich Chem.…”

“…As a result, the spiro-compounds are almost colourless or pale yellow since the lowest electronic transition of the molecule occurs in the near UV region. represented here by its TTC (trans-trans-cis) conformation (19,20). When irradiation is stopped, the solution returns thermally to the original state.…”

“…28 However, other transoid isomers, for instance, СТС configurations, are possible along with ТТС due to the stabilizing effect of the solvate environment at low temperature or the crystal lattice. 27 The cisoid (non planar) isomers of the open form are thermally unstable. In the literature they are usually associated with Fischer´s The width of the absorption band of the В form ap peared upon UV irradiation of the SPO1 film (see Fig.…”
