Phytosociological Survey of Weeds in Erect Prostrate Cowpea Cultivars

Abstract: -The goal of this study is to characterize the weed phytosociology in some major erect and prostrate cowpea cultivars in Brazil, in the Northern growing conditions of Minas Gerais state. The test was conducted in Janaúba, Minas Gerais state. The treatments consisted in five erect cultivars (BRS Guariba, BRS Tumucumaque, BRS Novaera, BRS Itaim and BRS Cauamé) and four prostrate ones (BRS Marataoã, BRS Pajeú, BRS Pujante and BRS Xiquexique). The plots were composed of four five meter rows, spaced 0.5 m apart, fo… Show more

“…Weeds are consistent with other surveys conducted in the studied region (Batista et al 2016;Batista et al 2017;Guerra et al, 2017) indicating a seed bank in the soil where some species stand out in relation to others depending on weather conditions and cultivated crop.…”

“…The similarity index (SI) was calculated as a function of the weeds that occurred in both experiments and had a value of 76.9%, with 15 species in both areas, evidencing that the cultivars were submitted to similar competition conditions. Batista et al (2017) studied the phytosociology of weeds in the cowpea cultivation of erect and prostrate growth habit in the north of Minas Gerais and verified an SI of 72%, which would be due to the similarity of cultivation conditions to which cultivars were submitted, such as climate, soil, cultivation period, and seed bank.…”

“…The groups of weeds vary according to the size of the plant, and type of growth. For example, erect plant species produce little shade when compared to plants with prostrate habit (Batista et al, 2017).…”
