Phytochemical screening of different Crataegus Oxyacantha extracts

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Crataegus oxyacantha L., the hawthorn, is a well-known medicinal plant with cardiotonic effect. This paper presents a complex phytochemical screening of polyphenols profile, both qualitatively and quantitatively, in three different extracts obtained from fresh berries, flowers with leaves and young shoots. There were used spectral (UV-Vis) and chromatographic (TLC, HPLC) methods to evaluate the total flavonoids, total phenolic acids and qualitative polyphenols profile of the extracts. The antioxidant… Show more

“…Flavonoids are the most abundant and wide-ranging class of compounds in hawthorn [ 25 , 26 ]. Currently, more than 60 flavonoids have been isolated from hawthorn [ 22 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 ], including the oxidized (chrysin, rutin, and quercetin) and reduced (proanthocyanidins, i.e., catechin derivatives) types [ 35 ].…”

“…Used since ancient times mainly in treating cardiovascular diseases [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ], its activity has been described as lipid-lowering [ 24 , 25 , 26 ], immunomodulatory [ 27 , 28 ], hepatoprotective [ 29 , 30 , 31 ], anti-inflammatory [ 32 , 33 ], antioxidant [ 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ], antimicrobial [ 33 , 37 , 38 ], anxiolytic, and antidepressant [ 39 , 40 ]. These activities have been associated with the different types of flavonoids that are present in the leaf, bark, fruit, and flowers of C. oxyacantha .…”
