Phytochemical profile and antimicrobial properties of Lotus spp. (Fabaceae)

Abstract: The phytochemical profile and antimicrobial activity of cultivar (cv.) extracts of Lotus uliginosus (cvs. Trojan and Serrano), L. tenuis (cv. Larrañaga) and L. corniculatus (cv. São Gabriel) were investigated. The phytochemical analysis revealed tannins, coumarins and flavonoids in all extracts, with variations among cultivars, showing genotypic variability. By High Performance Liquid Chromatographic method, the cvs. Larrañaga and São Gabriel showed the highest percentage of catechin and epicatechin, respectiv… Show more

“…and Fusarium sp. as described by Girardi et al (2014). In the present study, some flavonoids and catechins, especially (+)-catechin and (-)-epigallocatechin, synthesised de novo and 3-hydroxyflavone, pyrocatechol and myricetin significantly accumulated in TRS25+Rs plants were shown to strongly supress the R. solani mycelium growth.…”

“…Together with pyrocatechol, they may show antioxidant and antifungal properties as well as be monomer units of condensed tannin (Ghassempour et al 2011;Girardi et al 2014). As the most pronounced synthesis of different forms of catechins was observed in TRS25+Rs plants, their important role in preventing the spread of R. solani infection may be considered.…”

“…also included coumarins, flavonoids and tannins with potential antimicrobial activity (Girardi et al, 2014). Similarly, Alchemilla species (Rosaceae) were found to have tannins and catechins, phytochemical profile of various Ranunculus species (Ranunculaceae) included different secondary metabolite groups as triterpene saponins, alkaloids, cyanogenic glucosides that might be related to antioxidant and antibacterial activities (Wink, 2015).…”

“…The best elution of the peaks was achieved by using a mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile and water (proportion, 18:82 v/v) acidified with phosphoric acid to pH 3, with a flow rate of 1.0 mL·min -1 . The injection volume was 20 µL, and injections were made in triplicate (GIRARDI et al, 2014).…”
