Physiological and enzymatic changes in soybean seeds submitted to harvest delay1

Abstract: Harvest delay may affect the physiological quality of soybean seeds due to the occurrence of unfavorable environmental conditions in the field. This study was conducted to investigate the physiological and enzymatic changes in soybean seeds submitted to harvest delay. A randomized block design, with eight seed harvest periods (0; 5; 10; 15; 20; 25; 30; and 35 days after the R8 phenological stage - full maturity) of the BRS 820 RR® cultivar, with four replicates, was used. At each harvest period, the moisture c… Show more

“…Trop., Goiânia, v. 48, n. 3, p. 261-270, Jul./Sep. 2018 indications of vigor, such as seedling emergence, emergence rate index and seedling dry matter, are required (Zuffo et al 2017a and2017b). Thus, although the N levels resulted in lower pathogen incidences (Figure 3b), the application of this nutrient has only a small effect on the other variables evaluated.…”

“…resulting in 119.0 million tons of grains (Conab 2018). Due to its economic importance, it is crucial that soybean seed growers produce high-quality seeds to ensure more vigorous seedlings and the successful establishment of plants in the field (Zuffo et al 2017a).…”

“…Soybean is the main oilseed crop in Brazil and the world, especially on account of wide socioeconomic importance for the world agricultural sector. Therefore, the use of high-quality seeds is essential for the proper establishment of soybean agricultural fields (Zuffo et al, 2017). The proper plant establishment and development depends on balanced mineral nutrition management and this factor is essential for the commercial production of seeds with high vigor and high physiological quality (Carvalho;Nakagawa, 2012).…”

“…Therefore, cotyledonary cells of the seeds under simulated precipitation were more exposed to environmental conditions, and their deterioration process increased, which was reinforced by the results of the physiological and X-ray tests. Some studies with soybean seeds subjected to deterioration (whether by moisture, temperature, or harvest delay) report reduction in seed vigor, with differences mainly observed among factors such as genotype and intensity of deterioration (Forti et al, 2013;Castro et al, 2016;Huth et al, 2016;Zuffo et al, 2017).…”
