Physico‐Chemical Characterization of Moringa concanensis Seeds and Seed Oil

Abstract: The present work reports the characterization and comparison of Moringa concanensis seed oil from Tharparkar (a drought hit area), Pakistan. The hexaneextracted oil content of M. concanensis seeds ranged from 37.56 to 40.06% (average 38.82%). Protein, fiber, moisture and ash contents were found to be 30.07, 6.00, 5.88 and 9.00%, respectively. The extracted oil exhibited an iodine value of 67.00; a refractive index (40°C) of 1.4648; its density (24°C) was 0.8660 mg mL -1 ; the saponification value (mg of KOH g … Show more

“…M. stenopetala seeds have an average moisture content (on DM basis) of 6.1 g/100 g (Table 3). This value is comparable to the corresponding values reported (5.70 g/100 g) for Moringa oleifera seeds (Anwar and Bhanger, 2003) and M. concanensis seeds (5.88 g/100 g) (Manzoor et al, 2007).…”

“…High oleic-linoleic oils are of much interest because of their superior stability and nutritional importance. Linoleic acid is recognized as one of the most important polyunsaturated fatty acids in human food because of its preventive effects for distinct heart vascular diseases (Nicolosi et al, 2004, Manzoor et al, 2007. It is widely accepted that dietary fat rich in unsaturated fatty acids prevents cardiovascular, inflammatory, atherosclerosis, autoimmune disorders, and diabetes (Ramadan et al, 2006).…”

“…The specific extinctions at 232 and 272 nm, which are important indicators of oxidative deterioration of oils (McGinely, 1991;Manzoor et al, 2007), ranged from 2.17-3.16 and 0.44-0.91, respectively (Table 3). There are no previously reported data on these canola cultivars to compare the results of peroxide value and conjugated diene and triene contents with our findings reported here.…”
