Physical Activity, Inflammation, and Physical Function in Older Adults: Results From the Health & Retirement Study

Abstract: Physical function declines with aging due to physical and biological changes. The biological process of aging has been associated with increases in systemic inflammation and a greater risk for chronic conditions. In older adults, physical activity aids in maintenance of function. However, the influence of inflammatory biomarkers and adiposity on physical activity and physical function needs to be further explored. Methods: A cross-sectional secondary data analysis from Wave 13 of the Health & Retirement St… Show more

“…Concurrently, in COPD patients a progressive decrease in physical activity proportional to symptom progression has been reported, leading to a steeper decline in overall physical health status, promoting a vicious cycle that results in a progressive functional impairment [ 2 ]. On the other hand, physical activity plays a pivotal role in maintaining bone health given the role of mechanical stress stimuli on bone tropism and the positive effects of physical activity on skeletal muscle and bone–muscle crosstalk [ 24 , 26 , 27 ]. Moreover, it has been estimated that approximately 45% of COPD patients might have a compromised nutritional status related to the imbalance between energy expenditure and energy intake [ 28 ].…”

“…Many studies have shown that impaired daily physical function has become a common health problem among middle-aged and elderly people [ 5 ]. In addition, impaired physical function was strongly associated with individual disability [ 6 ] and increased risk of mortality [ 7 , 8 ] and can also affect the ability of middle-aged and older adults to care for themselves and live independently [ 9 ], as they often require more daily assistance and health care [ 10 , 11 ]. Related research data showed that by 2020, the elderly population with impaired physical function in China had reached 43.75 million, and it is expected to rise to more than 90 million by 2050 [ 12 ].…”

“…3,21 Second, reduced physical function measurements are associated with increased inflammation and impaired immune function. 22,23 Chronic inflammation is a risk factor for both CVD and cancer, as it can promote the development and progression of these diseases. Third, weakness in physical function can be a sign of sarcopenia and age-related declines in physical function, increasing the risk of mortality from various causes, including CVD and cancer.…”
