Physical-activity coaching and health status in rheumatoid arthritis: A person-oriented approach

Abstract: This person-based approach contributed more than did the results in a previous randomized controlled trial to the understanding of which patients benefit most from the present physical-activity coaching intervention. The intervention may thus be most beneficial for individuals more severely affected by their disease at baseline.

“…Following the RCT, a subsequent analysis with a person-based approach was performed, grouping participants using a cluster analysis [13] based on a selection of empirically supported and clinically relevant variables associated with general health perception. The variables were DAS 28 [17], pain (visual analog scale -VAS, 0-100) [19], muscle function of lower extremities (timed stands test -TST) [20,21], activity limitation (Health Assessment Questionnaire -HAQ, 0-3) [22,23] and physical activity behavior (self-reported amount of physical activity per week spent on low-, moderate-and high-intensity activity) [11].…”

“…The intervention was compared to ordinary physiotherapy. Further analysis of the material identified those individuals more affected by their RA as the ones gaining the most from the intervention [13]. However, to get the broader picture of the total effects of the intervention, its cost-effectiveness needs to be evaluated.…”
