Photosensitizer-Loaded Gold Vesicles with Strong Plasmonic Coupling Effect for Imaging-Guided Photothermal/Photodynamic Therapy

Abstract: A multifunctional theranostic platform based on photosensitizer-loaded plasmonic vesicular assemblies of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) is developed for effective cancer imaging and treatment. The gold vesicles (GVs) composed of a monolayer of assembled GNPs show strong absorbance in the near-infrared (NIR) range of 650–800 nm, as a result of the plasmonic coupling effect between neighboring GNPs in the vesicular membranes. The strong NIR absorption and the capability of encapsulating photosensitizer Ce6 in gold ve… Show more

“…3 GNP properties are convenient for biomedical applications, such as drug and gene delivery, 4,5 DNA detection, 6 bioimaging, [7][8][9] and photothermal therapy of cancers. 10,11 GNP safety data derived from studies on tissue cultures may not reflect the real picture in vivo. 12 Available in vivo data are contradictory.…”

“…The heating e®ect releases the encapsulated Ce6 molecules from fabricated AuNPs and signi¯-cantly increases the accumulation of Ce6 and assembled AuNPs in cancer cells for visualizing tumor tissues through thermal,°uorescence and PA signals separately. 36 It is a typical strategy and potential medical model using the optical properties of AuNPs for cancer theranostics.…”

“…Therefore, it is essential the improvement and the development of techniques to obtain porphyrin forming supramolecular structures 25 . On this sense, several kinds of techniques such as micelles 26 , vesicles 27 , Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films 28,29 , Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) films 3,4 and Layerby-Layer films 30,31 have been applied and optimized. Among them, LB and LS techniques represent widely employed deposition methods to fabricate porphyrin thin films in a controlled way onto solid substrates 25,32 .…”
