Photoinduced Metal-Free Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization of Biomass-Based Monomers

Abstract: Well-defined polymers derived from biomass feedstock (e.g., soybean oil, rosin acid, and furfural) were successfully prepared by metal-free atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). In the presence of photoredox catalysts and UV irradiation, three biomass-based methacrylate monomers were efficiently polymerized with good control over molecular weight and dispersity. NMR and MALDI-TOF MS confirmed high fidelity of chain end groups originated from initiators. Furthermore, block copolymers from these monomers … Show more

“…It can be prepared from dehydroabietyl chloride and hydroxyethyl methacrylate according to Scheme 11, prior to neutralization, drying, evaporation and chromatography [146]. It can be widely used as a monomer in preparation of graft and block copolymers [146,166,167,168,169,170]. It is worth noting, that a similar compound dehydroabietic ethyl acrylate is a yellow, viscous liquid, which can be prepared from hydroxyethyl acrylate and dehydroabietyl chloride prior to filtration, precipitation and vacuum distillation [171].…”

“…Furfuryl methacrylate (FMA) is a monomer derived from a biomass feedstock, furfural, and a promising monomer due to its potential availability from different carbohydrates, inulin, and agricultural or forestry waste . FMA can be synthesized from methacrylic acid of bio‐origin from the oil of roman chamomile plant.…”
