Photogrammetric Assessment of Upper Body Posture Using Postural Angles: A Literature Review

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this paper was to review the literature regarding the measurement properties of various angles used for postural assessment of the head, neck, shoulder, and thorax and to discuss the utility of these measures. Methods: The inclusion criteria for this literature review were use of postural angles to assess posture, measurement of upper body posture, and research studies conducted in last 3 decades that had free full-text available online entirely in the English language. The exclusion … Show more

“…The area where the rigid components are placed corresponds to the areas near the cervical curve (slight forward curve in the neck)—permanent magnet position—and the thoracic curve (slight backward curve in the upper back)—SensorTile module position—since these are two points used for postural assessment [ 18 ].…”

“…The craniovertebral angle (CVA) and the sagittal shoulder posture angle (SSPA) were used to quantitatively evaluate head and shoulder posture. 24,25 The CVA and SSPA values were measured by taking photographs, which is a highly reliable non-invasive method. [26][27][28] These two parameters are widely used clinically because they are easy to measure, being neither timeconsuming nor costly.…”

“…[26][27][28] These two parameters are widely used clinically because they are easy to measure, being neither timeconsuming nor costly. 25 Participants were asked to sit on a chair in a neutral position, look at a fixed point on the wall in front of them, put both of their hands on their knees and place both feet on the floor, with their thighs parallel to the floor. They were then asked to expose their neck and upper thoracic spine.…”
