Abstract: BACKGROUND: Actinic cheilitis, a common disease caused by chronic solar exposure and tobacco use, is considered a premalignant lesion with potential to develop into squamous cell carcinoma. Some of the available treatments are invasive, have unaesthetic results and require multiple sessions. OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of a therapy and its cosmetic results. METHODS: In this uncontrolled clinical trial a single photodynamic therapy (PDT) session using 16% methyl-aminolevulinate was performed on actinic ch… Show more

“…One study cleansed the lip with mild soap, water, and alcohol before photosensitizer application. 46,48,49 Most studies reported an incubation period of 2 to 4 hours under occlusion, with 3 hours most commonly reported. 46,48 Some studies placed a cotton or a tooth roll on the internal part of the lip to achieve better exposure during treatment.…”

“…The study of ALA and blue light reported incubation periods of 1 to 1.5 hours, 45 whereas the study of MAL and daylight reported no incubation at all. 40,42,43,[46][47][48][49] When MAL was used with daylight, subjects were simply exposed to daylight for 2.5 hours after application of MAL. 14,41,42,48,50 Studies using MAL and red light most commonly reported a treatment dose of 37 J/cm 2 with a range of 37 to 80 J/cm 2 , irradiances ranging from 70 to 192 100 mW/cm 2 for treatment periods of 7 to 12 minutes at a distance of 5 to 7 cm (Table 1).…”

“…The most affected age group corresponds to the 5 th decade of life [1]. Although solar radiation is the main risk factor for cheilitis on the lip, other factors, such as smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, sexually transmitted diseases, ethnicity, genetic and family predisposition, immunosuppressive state, malnutrition and socioeconomic status may also contribute to the development of such lesions [2].…”
