Developing novel, fast and efficient ecologically benign processes for removing organic contaminants is crucial for pawing the sustainable development in water treatments. For this reason, this study investigates the implementation of Cold Atmospheric pressure Plasma (CAP) generated in ambient air as an efficient agent for removal of Bisphenol A (BPA) and Bisphenol S (BPS)—known endocrine disrupting compounds in water and wastewater, by monitoring degradation kinetics and its transformation products. The highest removal efficiencies of BPA (>98%) and BPS (>70%) were obtained after 480 s of CAP exposure. A pseudo-first-order kinetic revealed that BPA (-kt = 0.0044 ̶ 0.0090 s−1) degrades faster than BPS (-kt = 0.0004 ̶ 0.0023 s−1) and that the degradation is also time- and CAP power-dependent, while the initial concentration or matrix type had a negligible effect. This study also tentatively identified three previously reported and one novel transformation product of BPA and four novel transformation products of BPS. Their postulated structures suggested similar breakdown mechanisms, i.e., hydroxylation followed by ring cleavage. The results demonstrate that CAP technology is as efficient or better in process duration and removal efficiency than other advanced oxidation processes but has the advantage of not requiring additional chemicals and needs a modest amount of electrical energy, making it a highly promising treatment for water and wastewater remediation.

An in-depth study on the degradation of bisphenol S (BPS) by both single-walled carbon nanotubes and heat activated persulfate (PS) was investigated in detail. The factors like materials dosage, initial substrate concentration, initial pH and water matrix on removal of BPS were evaluated and 10 µM BPS could be completely removed in 90 min under the optimal conditions of [BPS]0: [PS]0 = 1: 100, T = 25 ℃, pH0 = 7.0, [N-SWCNTs] = 20 mg·L− 1. Fast removal of BPS was also obtained when reaction temperature reached 65 ℃ without catalyst. There were 15 intermediates identified in total; and hydroxylation, sulfate addition, carboxylation, the cleavage of S − C bond and polymerization were considered as the main transformation pathways of BPS in both two systems based on LC-MS analysis. The proportion discrepancy of •OH and SO4•− involved in two systems led to different distribution and abundance of observed products. The results of transition state calculation further confirmed the reaction potential of hydroxylation, hydrogen atom abstraction and sulfate addition, and the minimum reaction barriers were 22.20, 25.06 and 13.85 kJ/mol, respectively. The present work firstly reveals the overall transformation behavior of BPS in radicals-triggered PS system by combining experimental and theoretical study.

Bisphenol A(BPA) is known as one of the oldest sentetic compounds with endocrine activity. BPA is commonly used in production of epoxy resins, policarbonates, dental fillings, food storage containers, baby bottles and mineral water containers. BPA is associated with various health problems such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, renal diseases, breast cancer, behaviour disorders, teeth development disorders and reproductive diorders. Increasing health concerns led the endustry to seek alternatives for BPA, as BPA has begun to be excluded from the products, the use of alternative bisphenols has been increased.However the chemicals used as a replacement of BPA are also bisphenols and may have similar physiological effects on organisms. According to the researches, it is demonstrated that BPA analogs may result in similar or higher toxic effects compared to BPA.
