The effect of illumination on the surface interaction and the reaction between NO + C 2 H 5 OH was investigated on Au/TiO 2 catalyst. By means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the formation of absorption bands at $2180 and $2210 cm À1 was observed. The first was attributed to the NCO species locating on Au particles, and the second one to NCO residing on the TiO 2 support. While the thermal reaction between NO and C 2 H 5 OH on Au/TiO 2 catalyst occurred with measurable rate only at and above 473-523 K, illumination of the system induced the reaction even at room temperature. A fraction of NO was converted into N 2 O, another one to N 2. At the same time, the photo-induced decomposition of C 2 H 5 OH also occurred yielding CH 3 CHO, H 2 , CO, and CH 4. Interestingly, the presence of NO significantly slowed down the rate of the decomposition of C 2 H 5 OH. Separate studies revealed that all the products formed in the decomposition of C 2 H 5 OH reacted with NO. A mechanism for the photocatalytic reduction of NO with C 2 H 5 OH is proposed taking into account the effects of the products of C 2 H 5 OH photolysis. Incorporation of N into TiO 2 , which significantly lowered its band gap, appreciably enhanced the reduction of NO, which occurred even in visible light.

A bottom-up synthetic methodology to encapsulate pre-synthesized, well-defined gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) into mesoporous titanium dioxide framework (Au@mTiO ) is reported. This method employs two structurally and chemically similar templates of amphiphilic block copolymers as well as poly(ethylene oxide)-tethered AuNPs, which showed excellent stability during sol-gel transition and thermal annealing at elevated temperatures. Such synthesis enabled precise control of sizes and loading of AuNPs within the mesoporous TiO framework. In light-driven methanol dehydrogenation, the presence of AuNPs significantly enhanced the photocatalytic activity of mTiO . This co-template-directed synthesis presents new opportunities to understand the effect of AuNP size in photocatalysis using Au@mTiO materials.

Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 Over Me (Pt, Pd, Ni, Cu)/TiO2 Catalysts

A series of TiO 2 photocatalysts loaded with various metals (Pt, Pd, Ni, and Cu) were prepared by using the wet impregnation method. Their physicochemical properties were studied by using XRD, BET, TPR-H 2 , FTIR and TPD-NH 3 /CO 2 techniques. The photocatalytic activity of samples was investigated in the gas-phase reduction of carbon dioxide under continuous flow operation mode. Among all investigated catalysts, the Pt and Ni were the most active in terms of the formation rate of methanol. In general, the photocatalytic activity of modified TiO 2 decreased with increasing metal loading and reaction time. The reversible deactivation of photocatalysts was associated with the covering of TiO 2 surface by the reaction products.
