Abstract:La(OH) 3 -modified exfoliated vermiculites were fabricated, characterized, and investigated for phosphate removal in batch tests for the first time. The BET surface area of the La 5 EV adsorbent, which was synthesized in the solution consisting of 5.00 mmol/g La/exfoliated vermiculite (EV), was significantly increased, accompanied with a larger pore diameter and greater total pore volume, as compared with the unmodified EV. The phosphate adsorption capacity of La 5 EV was approximately one order of magnitude higher than that of EV. Effects of initial phosphate concentration, contact time, temperature, pH, and 2 co-existing ions on the adsorption capacity of La 5 EV were investigated in detail. The experimental equilibrium data were fitted better by using the Langmuir model (maximum adsorption capacity of 79.6 mg P/g) than the Dubinin-Radushkevich or the Freundlich model, suggesting that the adsorption feature be monolayer. Meanwhile, the phosphate adsorption kinetics could be well described by the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption process might be controlled by boundary layer (film) diffusion. ∆G°, ∆H° and ∆S° were also determined, in which it was found that the phosphate adsorption , and SO 4 2-had neglectable effects on its phosphate removal capacities. In the synthetic secondary treated wastewater with a low phosphate concentration of 2 mg P/L, 97.9 % of its final adsorption capacity reached in the first 10 min and the phosphate concentration dramatically decreased below 50 µ g P/L. The spent La 5 EV could be regenerated and reused in phosphate adsorption; that could remove more than 70 % phosphate in the 3 rd adsorption-desorption cycle.

Abstract-In this study, an adsorbent (FO-Dowex) was prepared by modification of commercial strong base anion exchange resin (Dowex marathon MSA) with ferric oxide (FO) and applied as adsorbent for removal of As(V) from aqueous solution. The effects of initial iron concentration and reaction contact time on adsorption capacity of As(V) were investigated for optimal conditions of adsorbent. In addition, the FO-Dowex was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. It was shown that the optimal initial iron concentration and reaction contact time were 0.5 mol/L and 12 h, respectively. Comparison of adsorption performance between the prepared FO-Dowex and the anion resin revealed that FO-Dowex exhibited higher adsorption capacity with the value of 74.07 mg/g compared to the one from anion resin (49.75 mg/g) under the same conditions. It can be suggested that the modification of anion resin with ferric oxide can significantly improve the adsorption performance in As(V) removal.Index Terms-Adsorption, arsenic, ferric oxide, anion exchange resin.

ABSTRACT:Porous Pr(OH) 3 nanowires (NWs), which were synthesized via an electrodeposition approach, were utilized in phosphate removal for the first time. Our prepared porous Pr(OH) 3 NWs exhibited superior phosphate removal performances, due to their large surface area, unique porous structure, and abundant hydroxyl groups as active sites. Their phosphate adsorption equilibrium data were well described by utilizing the Langmuir isotherm model (R 2 ≥ 0.996), with a maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of 128.96 mg P/g at 25 °C. The thermodynamic study showed that the phosphate adsorption of Pr(OH) 3 NWs was a spontaneous and exothermic process. On the other hand, the phosphate adsorption kinetics was well described with the use of the pseudo-second-order model, suggesting the adsorption process be chemisorption. In the pH range of 3.0 -10.0, the high adsorption capacities of Pr(OH) 3 NWs were observed; whilst, the presence of Cl − , HCO 3 − , or NO 3 − did not dramatically affect the phosphate uptake. Our experimental results 2 strongly suggest that the use of porous Pr(OH) 3 NWs hold a great potential in achieving highly efficient phosphate removal in practical water treatment.
