Abstract: The condition of muskrat pelts known as "primeness" is found to be independent of dermal characteristics and to be a function of epidermal pigment distribution. The microscopic characteristics of prime and unprime fur pelts are discussed and correlated with the macroscopic characteristics. A method is suggested for detecting primeness in the skin of living animals.
