Phenology, seasonal abundance and stage-structure of spittlebug (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae) populations in olive groves in Italy

Abstract: Spittlebugs (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae) are the dominant xylem-sap feeders in the Mediterranean area and the only proven vectors of Xylella fastidiosa ST53, the causal agent of the olive dieback epidemic in Apulia, Italy. We have investigated the structured population phenology, abundance and seasonal movement between crops and wild plant species of both the nymphal and adult stages of different spittlebug species in olive groves. Field surveys were conducted during the 2016–2018 period in four olive orchards l… Show more

“…In each Region, the selected olive groves were located one in a coastal area and the other one in an inland area, to investigate spittlebug populations under different climatic conditions within the Mediterranean basin. Detailed information regarding the characteristics of surveyed olive groves is reported in [25]. From 2017, the field survey in the inland olive grove in Apulia (Locorotondo municipality) was moved to a new olive grove, very close to the previous one, because the grower tilled the soil and sowed broad bean planting in the olive grove monitored during 2016.…”

“…Philaenus spumarius was the most abundant species in all the surveyed sites. A detailed description of population structure through season and phenology of preimaginal instars is reported in Bodino et al (2019) [25]. Density of P. spumarius nymphs increased slightly, although significantly, at higher percentages of herbaceous cover [Negative binomial GLMM: β = 0.004 (CI 0.001-0.007), F = 6.56, df = 1, p = 0.012].…”

“…Nymphs of both species hatch in the early spring, crawl to a succulent part of the plant and feed on the sap, developing five nymphal stages during 4 to 8 weeks until molting into adults [ 13 , 14 ]. The period for nymph development varies according to environmental conditions of locations, such as altitude or temperature [ 3 , 9 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Generally, Aphrophoridae nymphs feed on herbaceous plants occurring within cultivated crops and non-crop habitats, particularly in meadows [ 16 ].…”
