Phenol alcohol technique for permanent matricectomy

Abstract: A simple technique for partial or complete destruction of the nail matrix with the use of phenol alcohol is outlined. A retrospective analysis of 30 random patients suggests that it has a low morbidity, is easy to perform, and has a high success rate. Therefore, it offers an excellent option to cold steel surgery, especially for the nonsurgically oriented dermatologist.

“…The main contraindications for chemical matricectomy are moderate to severe vascular disease of the foot, factors delaying wound healing, and allergy to the chemical used. 8,9 Surgical Treatment Surgical treatment is the best option available for stage 2 or 3 ingrown nails, as conservative approaches have high rates of failure and recurrence. Many surgical techniques have been proposed (Table 2).…”

“…28 The procedure is highly effective with reported success rates above 90%. 23,[29][30][31] Another advantage of the procedure is highlighted in a recent Cochrane Database Review which found reduced ingrown nail recurrence rates in phenol versus sharp excisional matricectomies. 15 …”
