“…ASMs are used not only for the treatment of seizures and SE but also for nonepileptic conditions (Fig. 3 ), including migraine headache, chronic neuropathic pain, mood disorders (such as bipolar disorder), generalized anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, and various neuromuscular syndromes [ 24 , 25 , 120 , 121 ]. In many of these conditions, as in epilepsy, the drugs act by modifying the excitability of nerve (or muscle) through effects on voltage-gated sodium and calcium channels or by promoting inhibition mediated by GABA A receptors (see below).…”

In addition, combined findings of randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses indicate that pregabalin is efficacious in both acute treatment and relapse prevention in generalized anxiety disorder [ 121 , 122 ]. Pregabalin was approved for generalized anxiety disorder in the European Union in 2006 [ 121 ].…”

“…There are different strategies to cope with stressful events, including, for example, cognitive-behavioral skills training, yoga, massage, mindfulness-based interventions, but also medication [3][4][5][6]. Medications may be antidepressants or, to reduce acute stress, benzodiazepines or other GABA (Gamma aminobutyric acid)-like substances, which are known to be linked to the risk of addiction [7].…”

“…Not surprisingly, the social-economic burden of anxiety disorders is no less than catastrophic. Last but not least, these problems, during the last decades have been observed to be in a constant increase [2][3][4][5][6]. In this context, it is not difficult to guess why pre-clinical studies using animal models, aimed at a better understanding of the behavioral features of anxiety disorders, have an extremely important role [7].…”
