Pharmacological Manipulation of Cortical Inhibition in the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex

Abstract: Cortical inhibition (CI) occurs largely through GABA receptor-mediated inhibitory neurotransmission, which can be modulated by cholinergic, dopaminergic, and glutamatergic inputs. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can be used to index CI through a paradigm known as long-interval CI (LICI). When TMS is combined with electroencephalography (EEG), LICI can index GABA receptor-mediated inhibitory neurotransmission in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). We conducted a hypothesis-driven pharmacological… Show more

“…In addition, the influence of other neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and glutamate, on LII cannot be excluded (Salavati et al . ) and may have contributed to the suppressed firing of neurons in the motor cortex, independent of GABA receptor‐mediated mechanisms.…”

“…This region has been suggested to be related the cognitive control of sensorimotor functions (Zhang et al, ), and to be a part of a long‐range association limbic–motor pathway (Rizzo et al, ). Synaptic activity in the limbic circuits is tightly regulated by a relatively small population of GABA inhibitory neurons (Prager, Bergstrom, Wynn, & Braga, ) previously suggested to be involved in P180 genesis (Ferreri, Ponzo, et al, ; Salavati et al, ).…”
