Pharmacogenomics of Nicotine Metabolism: Novel CYP2A6 and CYP2B6 Genetic Variation Patterns in Alaska Native and American Indian Populations

Abstract: Introduction Alaska Native and American Indian (AN/AI) populations have higher tobacco use prevalence than other ethnic/racial groups. Pharmacogenetic testing to tailor tobacco cessation treatment may improve cessation rates. This study characterized polymorphic variations among AN/AI people in genes associated with metabolism of nicotine and drugs used for tobacco cessation. Methods Recruitment of AN/AI individuals represent… Show more

“…A Native American Research Center for Health led by one of our partners has extended the pharmacogenetic research focus to tobacco cessation treatment, with potential implications for improved clinical management (38,130). We have also explored interest in pharmacogenetics in the communities where we work (44,124).…”

“…The CN, on the other hand, was beginning to think about the role of genetic research for its own community. While MB had participated in select genetic studies over the years ( Claw et al, 2020 ; Khan et al, 2018 ; Fohner et al, 2015 ; Woodahl et al, 2014 ), many questions remain about perceptions of genetic research that had never been asked of its community before the deliberation. Findings from this deliberation have been disseminated to the appropriate tribal authorities for review and consideration ( Reedy et al, 2020b ).…”

“…The NMR to CYP2A6 genotype relationship has been well‐studied in the non‐Hispanic White population of the United States, 14 but less so in racially and ethnically diverse populations, such as ANAI people 15–18 . Thus, we sought to characterize the relationship between NMR and CYP2A6 variation in a diverse ANAI population of individuals who actively smoked.…”
